About The Auckland Mikveh
Welcome to our Auckland Mikveh
Fundraising Campaign!
We are thrilled to invite you to be a part of a transformative endeavour
that will shape the future of our community.
Our mission is to establish a new Mikveh in the suburbs,
bringing the profound spiritual and communal benefits closer to home.
A Mikveh holds a deep significance in Jewish tradition, serving as a place of spiritual purification, renewal, and connection.
It is a sanctuary where individuals, families, and the community as a whole can immerse themselves in timeless rituals, strengthen their Jewish identity, and find solace in the embrace of our heritage.
History & Present
The Auckland Jewish community laid its roots in the second half of the 19th century, but it could properly consider itself a community in the Halachic sense when its first Mikveh was built in 1885.
Today, the existing Mikveh is located in the central business district of Auckland and is the main active Mikveh in New Zealand. There are people in NZ who travel upwards of one hour to come to use the Auckland Mikveh.
Numbers fluctuate from month to month, including locals, tourists and those using the Mikveh for dishes.
Mikveh use in NZ is quite unique, as here there are no Balaniyot, instead community women have stepped up and volunteered to take other women to the Mikveh. This is a nice way of keeping the community connected.
New Mikveh & Future
Earlier this year, the community relocated from the City Centre to the Eastern suburbs. This move has opened up incredible opportunities for the future.
Driven by our shared commitment to nurturing a thriving Orthodox Jewish community that caters to the needs of present and future generations, we are establishing a dynamic 'new' Jewish community centre in the heart of the suburbs. This centre is home to our Jewish school and Preschool, Orthodox shule, a Kosher Deli, youth movements, social hub, and much more.
As we strive to complete the relocation of our community to this beautiful and accessible location, our objective is to build a modern Mikveh at the heart of the community centre. While the previous Mikveh has served us well for many years, its distance has become a significant challenge for our community. Furthermore, the current Mikveh building will soon be sold as part of the relocation, making it even more imperative for us to establish a new Mikveh in our new home.
Community Impact
Will have a profound impact on our community in several ways:
Accessibility: A local Mikveh will provide convenience and ease of access for community members, enabling them to fulfil important Mitzvot and connect with their spiritual roots without the burden of long journeys or logistical challenges.
Enhancing the Mikveh Experience: Our new Mikveh is thoughtfully designed, modern, and beautiful. This aesthetic appeal will create a serene and uplifting atmosphere, providing an inviting space for spiritual reflection and personal growth. By investing in a modern facility, we aim to remove any potential barriers or discomfort that individuals may associate with traditional Mikveh settings. This enhancement will particularly encourage more women to utilise the Mikveh, ensuring that they have a comfortable and welcoming environment that respects their privacy and dignity.
Strengthening Jewish Identity: The Mikveh is an integral part of Jewish life and tradition. By having a Mikveh within our new community centre, we will create an environment that encourages the observance of ‘Taharat Hamishpacha’ and engagement with Jewish practices. This will strengthen the overall Jewish identity of our community, fostering a deeper connection to our heritage and traditions.
